As a bank executive, Herb Knoll was known as a man who could get the job done. But when Knoll lost his wife to cancer he found few resources that could help him recover. The more he learned about the plight of widowers, from high suicide rates to physical and emotional problems, the more he became motivated to write a book with fellow widowers, for fellow widowers.
Knoll’s The Widower’s Journey, tackles tough questions and provides advice on many topics, including
- how men can process grief
- keeping healthy during stressful times
- managing a career while coping with loss
- drawing strength from your faith
- reentering the dating world
- dealing with the issues that sex, dating, and marriage create
- parenting as a widower
- solving financial and legal problems
- preserving your late partner’s memory for yourself and family and friends
Knoll breaks down barriers that block men in their journeys to recovery. He encourages men to seek out the fellowship of other widowers, and he provides resources that men need to move forward.
Knoll identifies how society fails widowers, and spells out how institutions need to change so widowers can receive the support they deserve. The Widower's Journey offers advice that can assist the friends and family of a widower as they attempt to comfort him. Learning the lessons contained in The Widower's Journey is also beneficial to women who are dating a widower and who are eager to understand better what the widower has been through.

I am a "pre-widower" as the death of my terminally ill wife looms. I found Mr. Knoll's book one of the most helpful advice books for men who have lost a spouse, and will rely on it heavily in the months ahead. Being a widower himself, and with contributions from other widowers and a professional psychologist, the book is an accessible easy read with solid and helpful information and advice. It is well-organized and covers many male-specific issues of being single again after the loss of a life partner. Thank you Mr. Knoll for deciding to produce the helpful resource that you lacked when your own dear first wife passed.Product details

The Widower Journey Helping Men Rebuild After Their Loss edition by Herb Knoll Deborah Carr PhD Robert L Frick SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
The book is not just for men. I read it and got lots of good ideas from it. Thanks for sharing the info.
I like the stories from other widowers that author interviewed they were very insightful and just exactly what I needed to hear. It has helped me understand that I needed to get on with my life. I'm 76 and I didn't think I could ever date again and enjoy another woman's company I was wrong I do very much. I meant a widow at grief meeting and she wanted to have lunch after the meetings I finally got together with her and we set a time and day. I had the best time I have had in a very long time. That was worth the read in the book alone, but there is so much else I received from the book The widower's Journey. Thank you very much Mr. Herb Knoll for writing this book.
Herb Knoll's research and personal experience give him the perspective I need, and I'm sure other men will feel the same. I'm still in the fog, having lost my wife just over 2 months ago. Nothing in life prepares you for this, but knowing the unique experience widowhood is for men has been a big help. I'm not crazy, I'm grieving. Great book to read while I'm still in my cave trying to sort out what has happened, what my response to it has to be, and how I can work out embracing some kind of future.
My late wife passed away quickly and unexpectedly a year ago. We have been together over 30 years, High School sweethearts, and married 23 years. We adored each other, and personified the vow "in sickness and in health". Despite a chronic illness (Lupus) and a very, very complicated medical history, we was absolutely devoted to each other. When she passed, it was like a lighting bolt struck my soul, and I was absolutely adrift, alone and shell shocked. I didn't know what to do. I wasn't prepared to be a widower. I had never even considered it could happen..but there I was.
I checked hoping to find a book for widowers, and this book stood out as an excellent resource. I pulled the trigger and downloaded the version. Much of this book and the experience of other widowers feel like they were plucked right from my feelings and thoughts.
Everything thing I was feeling was right there on the pages. I highlighted many, many passages and went back to them time and time again. It was comforting to know that these horrible feelings of loneliness, grief, guilt, pain are not unusual, and in fact are very common. The author(s) did a great job explaining that while I felt lost, there is hope for the future. This book is exactly what I needed when I needed it the most.
It's not a book that gets read once and filed away. I have gone back to it many times over the last year. The book covers topic of the full spectrum of widowerhood, including the terrifying though of dating again.
If you are a new or impending widower, the resources for us are slim...but this book fulfills the needs, answers the questions, and gives you the power to carry on, even when you think you can't.
As I read Herb Knoll’s book, I couldn’t help but think that only a man who was a widower himself could have written such a powerful guide for other widowers. This was clearly a labor of love. I was touched by the candor expressed by Herb and his team of contributing widowers. This book is more than a mere read for widowers. For many, The Widower’s Journey will become the well-worn handbook they turn to when facing unanticipated hurdles. It’s about time someone wrote such a book. I’m glad Herb had the heart to do so.
My dad read this after we lost my mom, and I decided to read it too so I could better understand what he's going through. He and I both found it to be an excellent book. Lots of practical wisdom about different areas of moving forward in life, and good explanation for why men are just as much in need of support and resources as women are, following this profound loss. Great to read if you're wanting to better understand and help a widower in your life.
This unique book provides inspirational anecdotes about facing the loss of a wife and breaks down barriers that men confront with the grieving process and exploring whether they can discover love again and how society perceives the rights and wrongs of how men navigate this massive life change. The author not only shares his own very personal and heart wrenching journey with becoming a widower but he collaborates with experts in the field and provides deeply researched, science based information to support the book's premise. There is no shortage in this world of men of all ages who must face life without their bride and manage to reinvent their life and the stories volunteered by the book's contributors provide ample evidence that men struggle with this process but that there is a fulfilling life on the other side of the tragedy. Why does our society provide so much support to widows but seemingly ignore the plight of widowers? Look no further because this book has answers and good luck finding anything else like it. Don't assume that a widower in your life is ok. He is a master at burying his grief. This book provides a valuable outlet for a widower to explore his feelings, discover he is not alone, be introduced to a safe network of support and cope with their heartbreak.
