The critics said this book was disappointing when it was published, and they're probably correct from their contemporary viewpoint. It has typically one, sometimes a few, photographs of several Italian Gardens in Rome and close by, and each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of the garden. Platt put very little effort into the text. But! The photos were done on glass negatives, they're printed perfectly, and so they are wonderful. The descriptions are good enough, and I've found most of the sites on Google Earth and am planning a trip to see as many of them as I can. So for me being fascinated with Platt's talent, its a great book and I've read it cover to cover.Product details

This facsimile edition of Charles Adams Platt's 1894 book includes modern-day commentary by Keith Morgan, so it's helpful from two points of view. Morgan's 48 pages of scholarly opinion is in lucid prose, and helps put Platt into perspctive for the layman. The photographs and architectural drawings are stunning. Happy to have found this book from one of 's used-book dealers at a very nice price.
